What are Hotel Pillows? are they better?

Hotel Pillows are made to withstand more washes.and perform more durably, that ius the simple answer.

Four factors accomplish come into play in making sleeping pillows more durable

1)The type of fabric cover
2)The sewing process and sewing thread used
3) The type of fiber fill used
4) Packaging

Fabric covers  there are 8-10 Qualities available form inexpensive polyester cotton blend to 320 count tight cotton weave that is close to ticking quality.

Sewing we  use a regular straight stitch machine and for more durability we use sergers with a safety stitch attachment

Fill - We offer Cluster fiber and regular polyester fiber fill ,  Cluster fiber is small balls of fiber instead of starnds. yopu get a more down like feel in the pillow  Regular hollow siliconized conjugate fibre non recycled would constitutes  65% of our hotel and institutional orders, the cluster fiber go to  the higher end  hotels, bed and breakfasts, and overnight spas.

Hotel pillows are usually;; packed 20 in a larger bag specially compressed to fill a shipping carton and shipped by the case Where as retail pack pillows are individually  packed in nice retail bags  for store display. the retail  can be supplied by the customer or we  provide a printed 2 mil polyethylene bag on which we can put the store or shops private label or logo.

Dog Beds Vs. Floor Pillows

The fundamental difference between a dog bed and a floor cushion is the fill weight. When we manufacture our dog beds, they are generally filled like a "bladder" with far less fill than the floor cushions. Dogs are not as heavy as humans, which means you don't need as much fill.

Polyester is synthetic and is safe for both humans and dogs alike. Unlike feathers and down fill, dogs will not smell any other animal on the fill. Dogs go crazy when they smell down/feather filled pillow forms, so a polyester fill is always recommended around pets.

If you have a dog that tears fabric open, then you need to be handy with a sewing machine. Buy some cheap fabric and some loose stuffing from your local fabric store. You won't need more than 2 to 3 pounds for each dog bed pillow. Simply sew the edges together and hand stuff the polyfill inside and presto! you have a dog bed for your doggie.

How to wash down feather pillows and cushions

Guide to washing & cleaning your down feather pillow form.
Please read carefully to the end before utilizing and please try it on one down feather pillow form, as the cushion inserts are filled by hand and made in various workshops.
If there are any tears or holes in the covering DO NOT PROCEED as the high thread count fabric is made specially to stop the down from " leaking"
It is preferable to use a front loading machine as they have a gentler cycle. And use gentle detergent such as Woolite , never use bleach
Don't overload the washing machine put in half loads
begin the wash cycle before loading the cushion inserts use a pre-soak cycle and add extra rinse cycles.
Add about a-half cup of detergent after the pre soak cycle wait for the machine to fill.
After the pre soak cycle put the pillow inserts or cushion inserts in the washer. As down feather inserts are light and float it is suggested to soak them for two hours in the machine in the pre soak water and then s float tnd place the pillows inside. Down and feathers float so you will have to push the pillows under water and squeeze out as much air as possible. Leave the forms to soak for up to a few hours.
Now start the machine on a gentle wash cycle.
Use a gentle spin dry cycle, get them as dry as possible , the less time they spend in the dryer the better
Put the pillows in the dryer right away and take out as soon as they are dry. Make sure they are dry do not put them back in the case if not absolutely dry
You may be able to save the whole washing drying cycle you only ahe to remove some spots. In that case use a combination of fabric spot remover with baking soda. and a soft brush. absorb with a terry or paper towel
Avoid washing more than 2 or three times a year as it will effect the integrity of the down and goose feathers
any comments or futrher instructions would be appreciated.

Custom Sizes Vs. Stock Sizes

Had a client come in today and request a "funny" size, i.e. a size we don't regularly make. I've blogged about custom sizes before but its worth mentioning again here. He remarked that the price seemed high as compared to smaller stock sizes. I gave him my usual response (which is actually true and not just a sales pitch) of "I'd rather make the stock size and charge less than make the custom size and charge more". He looked at me skeptically but ultimately accepted the price.

Custom sizes screw with the effecient TQM process we employ here, often casuing blips in the production process that filter out to other clients. Custom sizes are an important part of the business, so we should probably work on maximizing the efficiency of producing them so that they don't clog the production process.

The dilemna of keeping many different sizes

We often have strategy discussions weighing the relative merits of carrying odd sizes such as 10" x 30". Usually we focus on all the major sizes and leave off the more unique sizes as custom work. This becomes an issue when trying to close new accounts who are annoyed that we don't carry "their size". Ultimately, we focus on keeping a just-in-time manufacturing process to eliminate cost of carrying and reduce product cost and thus selling price to the customer. It is this lean business model that has made us a succesful manufacturing corporation for many many years.

We can and will take care of all of our clients and deliver whatever size they need. Custom size pillow forms are welcome with the right quantity, as their is an economy of scale for custom work.

What size and shape decorator pillow to use

Rule # 1 Pillows and cushions within a room do not have to match. Biggest decorating mistake made by a layperson is buying all the same colorways.

Rule # 2 Know what you want to accomplish, if you want a a formal look most common size 18 inches square it is not too large on a small seat and will not look out of place on a sofa.
If the furniture has a low back I recommend using 16 inch square decorator pillows, With extra firm pillow inserts.
For a casual feel go with the 22 inches or 24 inches square, Always use a down feather insert in the larger decorator pillows unless you are using the larger size as a floor pillow in which case go with the polyester fiber fill

Rule # 3 Use them odd numbers one for the chair and three to five for the love seat or sofa

Rule # 4 What feel do you want , Down feather inserts are more luxurious, and of course are more expensive. Polyester filled pillow inserts are stiffer, plumper and more resilient

Rule # 5 Don't just look at the furniture, look at the whole room. the wallpaper the floor or floor covering, even the view from the window should help you decide which colors or combination of colors to use

Rule # 6 More expensive is not necessarily better. Get the look and feel that you want. Consider decorating a work in progress allow yourself the opportunity to experiment and make changes slowly

On a future post I will discuss the various shapes, when they should be used

I found this great three minute  YouTube video of a professional decorator explaining sizes and colors you should find it very helpful

What size pillow insert to order for your decorator cushion

The most common question asked is " If my cushion is say 18" x 18" what size pillow insert do I buy? " Now that we have an online chat button on our nussopillows.com we are asked that question more than once a day.

The simple answer is , it is a matter of personal taste. For a 18" x 18" decorator cushion 18" x 18" pillow insert or 20" x 20" insert pillow form will work.

Basically its the look you want to accomplish. You want to make sure the corners are nicely filled and if the cushion on the chair, sofa or love seat is being used for support a plump polyester look will not be comfortable.
I would recommend a down feather insert either 18" x 18" or 20" x 20" again depends on the manufacturers.
Lets get past the technical stuff and then we will come back to personal tastes
When measuring make sure measurements are seam to seam, measured across the middle.
The following table is a guideline for the most popular sizes and what we suggest in a firm polyester filled pillow form, used for decorative purposes

Outer Cover Size
Pillow Insert Size
14" square
16" square
16" square
18” square
18" square
20 square
I want to stress again it is a matter of personal taste. ask your decorator to bring a sample of  various sizes and try them out. You will then have made a decision you will never have second thoughts about.   We  encourage our decorator or designer clients to bring in their customers cushions and try out the various sizes to make sure everybody is happy
The following youtube video form another manufacturer , will give you visual description of the above article
The example they use is a 24"x 24"but the message is the same.

Halloween Crafts made of our polyester fiber and quilt batting

There was surge of buying in September of  polyester fiber fill  and polyester filled pillow forms by carfters and hobbyists  this year. This type of  spike in sales usually happens in October for Christmas,.

Decorator Cushions Holiday
Upon investigating I found that  many small manufacturers, hobbyists and craft guilds are now making a line of cushions , chair pads for rocking chairs, bolster pillow forms ( no pictures sent in though)  and quilted wall hangings for Halloween.

I put out  an email asking those who bought the polyester staple fiber  for some photos and I  will post afew.

Understandability the Halloween selling season is short however it seems its quite lucrative for clients of Nussopillows

We did help them out this year by offering orange and black broadcloth to colors very popular in Halloween crafts and projetcs
I found that the most popular size made this time was the 26x26 euro pillow form insert all the way down to the small pillow form 10x12 ( pictures enclosed) Here are a few photos that were sent in.

Quilted Christmas decorative items using polyester batting

Halloween is still on crafters' mind, however in a short while after halloween has come and gone and the tasty treats are finished. Christmas crafting projects will be on top of everybody's to do list.
There is only so much quilt batting that we can produce from our virgin hollow siliconized conjugate  polyester fiber in the short period between Halloween and early December. Please consider thta when you are planning your projects. Avoid being disappointment and order early. As you know out quilt batts do not spoil with age., they will always retain their loft and bounce . So if you over buy. you have invested and a head start for your next project.
Enough said I will post some pictures of some Christamas project that were sent  to me last year. I hope this helpful to you in developing your ideas. Please if you like to share, send me pictures of your projects and i will post with fellow crafters. Once again thank you for your support.

Hey aquarists use polyester fiber and qulit batting as aquarium filters

Got the strangest call early last week from a pet supply store. They are looking for non recycled clean polyester fiber for thier aqaurium filters.
I was reluctant to ship as I felt perhaps the polyester as it is treated to be slick and bouncy may do harm to the fish.
I searched the internet AND was surprised to find that that many posts and forums that advocate the use of polyester fiber based filters to save the consumer money.
Variations included quilt batting made up of polyester fiber.
I checked both fresh water and salt water tanks , yes consumers are using filters made up of the polyester fiber or small pieces of polyester quilt batting.
They are claiming savings of up to 90% over the cost of packaged filters bought in the specialty shops.
I remember when I had an aquarium I dreaded the days i had to change filters as it was an added cost to my low student budget.
Using polyester fiber or quilt batting will make these costs insignificant. Remember do not use recycled fiber as it may come from unidentified sources. Enjoy your hobby

down feather cushion insert vs polyester filled insert

Just read an article in the National Post , the author a renowned designer mentioned she was very adamant on down feather inserts , which we do carry. However my experience is that once I show a designer that I can fill the insert with less fill or use cluster fibre, I get a feel that is close to down.
This is very aattractive to people with allergies and on tighter budgets.
As we use hollow siliconized fiber , and not recycled fiber the cushions do not become flat over time.  On a different blog I write how to keep them plump.
You can do it yourself as well if you can sew. By opening the end and removing some of the stuffing till you get the down feather feel and sew it closed.
Please visit our factory and we will show you the many options available.

What's the difference between pillow forms and cushion inserts

I often get asked what the difference is between a cushion insert and a pillow form. On our website we list both, which sometimes causes confusion to potential customer who are unsure what to purchase. The simple answer is that they are exactly the same thing - i.e. they are synonyms.

The reason we list both is that peope seem to know either one term or the other so we want to make sure that potential customers know what product we are selling. Other variations include cushion forms and pillow inserts, again all amounting to the same product.

How to keep our cushion inserts and pillows plump and fluffed up

It is the humidity in the air and the moisture from the body that contributes to the reduction of loftiness in pillows or cushion inserts.
Easy solution.--- let them lie in the sun for 30 minutes every few weeks and you cushions or pillows will last much longer, I will write how to keep  the down feather products plump   after i research it thoroughly..  I tried using the sun, it works better than the dryer for some reason.

Saving on Shipping Costs

Some of our clients ship out our pillow inserts alongside the cushion covers they make. At times this is challenging since it is difficult to ship bulky items like pillow forms. As a unique solution to this, Nusso possesses proproetary compression technology which allows us to individually package and compress each pillow form in order to save our clients on shipping. We are always striving to serve our customers and develop better solutions for shipping, quality and product range.

poleyster fiber pricing condundrum

We estimate that approximately 80% of the content of our pillow forms is polyeter fibers  That is what gives the pillows thier loft and resilience

tHe olyester fiber is made of  oil-based product and the shell is of  polypropylene show which is also an oil-based product

The commodity market  these days is very erratic and the price of the raw material varies from 10 to 20% any month

taht being the case we want to have the lowest  price possible and treat  our valued  customers well and with fairness. We change our prices ongoing so when you're ordering larger amounts please check with us for current pricing perhaps we can save you even more

Prices will never be higher than was quoted on our website but for larger quantities we can sometimes buy stocks of fiber filling and save both sides money

chiropractric dog bone shaped pillows

The dog bone pillow is a multifunction chiropractic pillow that serves as a neck support as well as a leg spacer. It is very comfortable with the handles - you can hold on with your hand and also between your legs for relieving back pain. Many corporations or therapeutic practices use these pillows for promotional purposes; they put their logos on them or on the bag and give them out to customers at golf tournaments at medical practices for psychiatry offices chiropractic offices etc.

More about the polyester fiber we use

Our production is as posted earlier hollow Siliconized conjugate fiber ( also spelled fibre) . it makes for a beautifully crafted product. What was not mentioned earlier is that the length and the thickness of the fibre used also play a role in bounce resiliency and loft of pillows and cushions

Denier is the thickness of the fiber, for upholstery and stuffed toys, a thicker denier is used. We find that our products perform optimally when we use between 7 and 15 denier. Additionally, higher denier fibers generally refluff after being compressed better than thinner fibers.

Fibre length understandably play a role in product performance, longer lengths when conjugate give it a nice bounce. the down side is that longer lengths slow down the manufacturing process. We find a happy medium with 64 mm fibre length it flows through the machine smoothly with no sacrifice of product quality

CRAFiT(tm)will be launching their DIY kits to bring fashion, quality fabrics and artistry
to the world of people interested in sewing. All skill levels are considered.
I bought pillow forms at a large local retailer, but was not happy with the density of the
fill in them. The ones I received from Nusso have easily 50% to 75% more filler and keep their
shape. There's nothing worse than a pillow that collapses once it is put to use.
Thank you! I will be back for more.

Hollow Siliconized Conjugate Polyester

At times, customers ask me what we mean by describing our pillow forms as made with "hollow, siliconized, conjugate, virgin polyester fiber". As much as it sounds like a bunch of jargon, here is a brief explanation of what it all means:

Hollow: This means that it traps the airl; in other words this is what gives the pillow forms their loft and shape.

Siliconized: The polyester fibers are coated with silicon. In cheaper fibers, the silicon coating is not used and this causes the fibers to stick together. Silicon coating allows the fibers to slide over each other.

Conjugate: Conjugate polyester fibers are twisted, giving it extra resiliency and bounce, allowing it to last long and fill pillows up with a strong loft factor (fill power).

Virgin: This means that the fiber is made from all new, non-recycled polyester fibers only.

outdoor pillows simplified

Our polyester fiber is suitable for outdoor cushions.
Here's an idea to make beautiful timely outdoor pillows use vinyl table cloths
Using the vinyl table cloth even flannel backed ones will work , One can cut out the pattern or shape, now you have to decide are you going to put a purchased pillow form inside or will you stuff it with polyester fibre., With the former you have to leave 1 side open to insert the foam. With the latter you need a smaller opening to manually put in the stuffing. either way you wil have a beautiful long lasting product.
As you can see in the photo the covering is weatherproof  however the inside is the same as for the all purpose indoor decorator

A word of caution though, to our contact customers  if you are preparing out door cushions for us to fill , you must understand that it is a longer precess as the covering is not porous and our blowers will have to  finish the filling process manually . In any case you will always get a nicely finished product.

Some thoughts about Down/Feather pillow forms

Our biggest concern prior to our foray into down/feather pillow forms was the possibility of receiving unusable product. Feather pillow forms sometimes smell, so it is very important to ensure that the feathers are washed, sterilized and thoroughly cleaned before putting them in the pillow shell. It is also important to ensure that the pillow shell is a high enough thread count so that the down and feather inside does not leak.
Nusso's down and feather pillow forms use clean, washed white goose down feathers to ensure a nice clean look and plump professional feel for its entire range of feather and down pillow forms.

Many sizes of pillow forms

We make our polyester filled cushion inserts on site here in Canada. Our manufacturing capabilities allow us to make a full range or pillow form sizes ranging from as small as 10" x 10" all the way to 36" x 36". 10" x 10" pillow forms are usually used for ring bearer pillows and is a hard size to find. The 36" x 36" are usually used as floor cushions and have a generous amount of polyfil inside them.

Shapes made to fill outer coverings include square, round, rectangular, oblong and bolster. The most common sizes are 16" x 16", 18" x 18" & 20" x 20" in the squares.
As mentioned in previous posts, when selecting the pillow insert size, the insert should be a bit larger than the finished cover size, this keeps your cover looking full.

The bolster forms round out (no pun intended) the full manufacturing range of Nusso. Our strength is our manufacturing quality and customer service, creating many loyal customers.

Girl Guide Pillow Projects

Girl guides participate in may projects other than selling cookies. A popular type of project involves the making of pillows. Our pillow forms, polyester stuffing and quilt batts, make a fantastic material for any pillow project. We always recommend to go with the most popular sizes 16" x 16", 18" x 18" or 20" x 20" inches. For more information and a full list of other sizes please visit our pillow form website.

We do make custom sizes, however, they are a little more costly and take a while longer to deliver. With their permision I will share some of the beautiful items they have crafted over the last number of years, stay posted for pictures to come in future blog posts.

How often should one change Polyester filled sleeping pillows

In order to save money, use a zippered fabric pillow protector and change your protector or pillow cases often. Wash as required and tumble dry on a cool cycle.

Why change the pillow? Over time mildew, bacteria and body oils penetrate through the coverings into the pillow, affecting both hygiene and pillow performance, i.e. resilience & form.
You spend 6-8 hours daily on your pillow, keep it fresh and clean.

Types of fill in manufactured pillow forms

There are a two primary types of fill you can find for pillow forms and cushion inserts:

Down/Feather pillow forms and polyester filled pillow forms are the two main groupings. Down and Feather fill provide a "memory" type of fill in that the forms take time to bounce back to their original shape. This provides a higher class look than you get from the polyester filled cushion inserts.

The poly filled pillow forms are usually much cheaper than their down/feather counterparts and can give a much fuller look.
